Venues of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics
The compactness of the venues of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Pyeongchang has been one of the winning arguments of the bid. The Games are gathered around two main venues, the mountain resort of Alpensia for the outdoor sports such as Nordic and alpine skiing, bobsled, etc. and the coastal city of Gangneung for the indoor sports such as figure skating, hockey, curling, etc.) In addition there are two mountain stand-alone venues.
The Games will have a total of 13 competition venues, six of which will be new. The speed-skating rink was the last to begin construction, which started in October 2014.
Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium will seat 35,000. No Olympic or Paralympic events will be held at the stadium, which will only be used for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The ceremony’s message will centre on peace, with five children from rural Gangwon province leading the ceremony, and will include animals, nature and a cast of 2,000. Augmented reality and 5G technology will also be incorporated in the event.
